Glass is a very fragile, precious material and is one of the symbols of the city of Venice. But the process to forge it is hard and tiring, and the Venetian furnaces on the island of Murano are as hot as hell!
On the occasion of the Venice Glass Week, the Fondazione Ugo e Olga Levi presents “THE BURNING SUN Murano Reloaded“, a photographic exhibition by Maurizio Barberis and curated by Patrizia Catalano and Silvio Fuso.
The exhibition is inspired by a series of images dedicated to the Murano furnaces, emphasizing their invisible temperature. A burning sun shines here, an archetypal Kosmos set on the horizon by a red alchemical planet, inspired by the Red Book (Jung) and from the latest selfportrait of Parmigianino.
An imaginary integrated with the reality of places thanks to a continuous deformation of space, which is perceived as a stratification of the Mundus (Jung), and of time, lived through a synchronicity of events, both allusions, space and time, a single poetic stratification of the idea of a labyrinth, a virtual place to whom we are introduced by the figure of the Myth, the Minotaur, an Angelic Daimon, a ‘common thread’ who, through the labyrinths of the unconscious, can emphatically bear witness of the places where the figure of the master has always been acting, in Murano.
Twenty images, large format, enclosed by a series of handmade frames expressly designed by the author and realized by CL Italy, a historic company specialized in high cabinet-making.
Maurizio Barberis is an architect, artist and photographer. His work has been exhibited in numerous institutional locations and art galleries in Italy or abroad such as the Morat Foundation in Friborg, the Lanza di Trabia gallery in New York, La Triennale di Milano, the Dilmos gallery in Milan, the Mangini Bonomi Museum in Milan, the Sala Napoleonica in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan and the Consulate General of Italy in New York. He also won a photography prize at the XII Venice Architecture Biennale curated by Kazuyo Sejima SANAA.
