The tenth edition PARALLEL VIENNA art fair will once again take place in the former Semmelweisklinik, from 06 to 11 September 2022. PARALLEL VIENNA is now one of the largest contemporary art fairs in Austria. For ten years, the curatorial team has invited a wide range of galleries, offspaces and institutions to show their artistic positions. The fair is a platform for emerging as well as established artists from Austria and abroad.
In 2022, 170 rooms in the two buildings of the former maternity clinic and the hospital school will once again be filled with more than 600 artistic positions.
The PARALLEL VIENNA concept of inviting Artist Statements, Project Statements, Gallery Statements, Curator Statements, institutions and art universities will be maintained in order to provide a showcase for the diversity of the Austrian and foreign art scene. In this way, around 30 up-and-coming artists are also supported each year by providing them with a room free of charge as an “Artist Statement”.
In addition, an extensive performance programme and outdoor sculptures are presented outside the clinic. Visitors are invited to linger over food & drinks in the green space between the two buildings of the fair. Furthermore, numerous special shows and a wide range of collaborations are planned, including with the mumok, the Volkstheater, the Leopold Museum, the Ö1 Talent Exchange, Bildrecht, the PARNASS art magazine, the Hybrid Art Fair Madrid and many more!
PARALLEL VIENNA is a hybrid between art fair, exhibition platform and artist studio. It unites exhibitions made by commercial galleries (GALLERY STATEMENTS — each with a solo presentation of an artist), off-spaces and art associations (PROJECT STATEMENTS – a solo or group show) and solo presentations by selected artists (ARTIST STATEMENTS or artistic INTERVENTIONS in the building invited directly by PARALLEL VIENNA). Instead of the usual booths at art fairs, each exhibitor occupies a separate room of the building in which the exhibition is presented. These site-specific artworks and interventions are the trademark of PARALLEL VIENNA and make the fair a unique and alternative exhibition format outside the”white cube”. As a curated art fair participation is upon invitation by the curatorial team only.
