During the few weeks left to the Biennale Arte 2024, The PhotoPhore will guide you with a series of itineraries, divided among the different neighborhoods of Venice (“sestieri“), with the most relevant exhibitions in the city, selected by our editorial team.

Titled Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere and curated by Adriano Pedrosa, the Biennale Arte 2024 will see the participation of 88 National Pavilions, 30 official Collateral Events, and a huge number of parallel exhibitions organized by museums, foundations, private and international institutions around Venice.

The Peter Hujar Foundation, New York presents the first exhibition in Europe of Peter Hujar’s legendary Portraits in Life and Death, a Collateral Event of the 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, 2024. Comprising the complete set of 41 photographs reproduced in the 1976 book, Portraits in Life and Death — the only publication Hujar produced during his lifetime — the exhibition will be curated by Grace Deveney, David C. and Sarajean Ruttenberg Associate Curator of Photography and Media at the Art Institute of Chicago. Hujar is renowned for photographing his subjects with penetrating sensitivity and psychological depth. Deeply embedded within the avant-garde milieu of artists, musicians, writers, and performers in downtown New York during the 1970s and early ‘80s, Hujar’s unflinching portraits captured his subjects with astonishing intimacy and vulnerability.

The ground floor will also host Quinze’s Impact Glass (2024) installation—fifteen individual glass sculptures created with Berengo Studio. The church’s voluted colonnade will feature the artist’s first large-scale ceramic sculptures, created in collaboration with Atelier Vierkant.

Ben Brown Fine Arts presents Planète Lalanne, a comprehensive exhibition of the celebrated artistic duo Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne that will take over the historic Palazzo Rota Ivancich in Venice. Curated by Jérôme Neutres, the fantastical sculptures, furniture and objets d’art will be placed throughout the palazzo in intimate dialogue with this unique environment, highlighting their ingenious functionality and surrealist whimsy, imagining an enchanted ‘Palazzo Lalanne’. With over 150 works, Planète Lalanne will be one of the largest Lalanne exhibitions historically and the first in Italy.
