American artist Elise Wehle can do everything she wants with paper: bend it, cut it, weave it, fold it, etc. Adding pieces to the composition, she could also take away from the paper itself, cutting intricate patterns.
Elise ceates collaged images that adopt a spectrum of tactile mediums for their creation. Her hand-cut works are synthesized with layers of an assemblage of mixed media, transforming the images into distressed and textured compositions.
“I love mixed media and collage art because the boundaries are already set. I often start a collage with a limited set of photos, and working with those limited resources helps me be more creative. I find I am more creative when I have restrictions to fight against, and mixed media gives me just that.
I make the art I do to pull me away from the increasingly digital world that surrounds me. Every day I spend so much time in front of a glowing screen that sometimes I forget I possess five bodily senses and not just one or two. Making art makes me conscious of my hands again, and all of my work requires time-intensive, redundant movements that remind me that not everything is as instantaneous as a click of a mouse.
By weaving together paper, cutting lines, and folding shapes, I manipulate drawings, photos, and prints to create new landscapes for me to explore.”
