Isabella Berr was born in Schongau and lives and works in Munich with her husband and her two children. Her photography shows us ambiguous and indeterminate identities and actions. “In Berr’s pictures there are subtle and rich repetitions of forms and patterns of light. Her pictures are made in the waxing and waning light of dusk and dawn.
Just as musical melodies are the result of the relationship of one note to another – Berr’s photographs are built on the relationship of areas of light and patterning that develop within each image. The dynamics of the pictures are the result of how our eyes combine the parts of the picture to build a nebulous whole.
A stillness, or frozen moment, is activated and dances in front of our eyes as we watch modulations of form and color suggests various identities and meanings.
People and places are secondary. She references a modernist world that aspires to dreamscapes. The pictures contain obvious clues to her world but accommodate multiple interpretations. Rather than using the pictures as ‘evidence’ of what has happened at a frozen moment – perhaps they can suggest what might happen.
